What is a Facebook Friend?..Really…Part 2

Four paragraphs below is an original story from Feb. 26, 2010, that to date remains my largest single blog with over 10,000 readers. These first three paragraphs here are a footnote and update to that story. When I wrote this my blog was but a week or so old and I was relatively new on Facebook. I have learned a lot since then. I have learned that FB friends are the same as those in real life, in some respects. There are haters, some encourage, supporters, some that reject, those who want to argue for argument’s sake, and then those who want to be an instrument of God to uplift, encourage and strengthen the body of Christ. I have FB friends that are Muslim, Hindu, Jew, Atheists, etc. on and on. I absolutely LOVE interacting with all of them. There have been many of my Christian brethren that have uncharitable and downright rude when dealing with those of other faiths as we interact on the pages. There have been others that have beamed with the love of Christ, His love flooding their words. As for myself, I have been redeemed by the blood of Christ. He is my Lord and Savior. I preach Christ and Him crucified. I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Just so you know the foundation of my belief, if you believe different from me, that’s OK with me too, lets talk about it. I still want to be your friend, I grow and learn so much by listening to you. Part of my ministry is reaching out to those of different faiths, my life is enriched. Many of my blogs have been devoted to that. I have found a few FB friends are like some of those in life,  projecting their personal thoughts and agendas that seem to supersede those of the message of the Cross.

Since this blog began, I can tell you in all honesty tell you that I am personally aware of many individuals that have come to Christ or rededicated their lives to Christ by reading the blogs, in many instances it is because of you, my FB friends as your interactions with readers that have left comments. You have touched their hearts in some special way, bringing comfort, conviction, and conversion. Now that’s exciting. Those that interact and share with readers of the blog have become the reapers of the seeds I have sown, interacting, sharing and helping bring others to the foot of the Cross. You are powerful, my FB friends, you are needed, and God is using many of you, keep it up.  Some of the messages I receive from you are amazing. Do you have a story that FB readers need to hear, a story that can be use to bring others to the Cross, a story of the awesomeness of God, a story of pain, in need of healing whatever? Please send it to me to my inbox.

I have written some stories about a few of my FB friends. There are some with shattered hearts that are my FB friends, there are some that are conquerors, some are courageous, all are special in one way or another. I have written about some my FB friends in; Kenny wants to Dance, http://wp.me/pOzVc-4B, a heart-warming story about a young man with MD, we heard about a Christian woman converted from being a Hindu and her friend converted from Islam that have been treated badly by Christians now in need of healing from that treatment in; Where is the Love? http://wp.me/pOzVc-4T. There are judgmental FB friends that are not so nice discussed in; What did you just call me? http://wp.me/pOzVc-4m. Friends I have met in real life that now are FB friends in; I met a Muslim today http://wp.me/pOzVc-42. A FB friend in that was once in prison for life, a former Kingpin Drug-lord, now serving the real King outside prison with his life, a servant of the Lord with a remarkable story and powerful testimony in; A True Story, From  Rikers to Righteousness  http://wp.me/pOzVc-1U.

I appreciate all my FB friends. The article written below is to uplift that friendship, please do not attack me, bombard me with apps, and sent me hate mail as many did the first time this story was published. Please receive it as it is given, in love.

There is one thing that I want to say right off the bat, which is that this article is not purposely written to offend anyone. I am going to discuss our friendships here on Facebook, and our use of applications, notices, gifts, messages and such between us. I am going be direct and say how I feel. I am not intentionally trying to be rude or judgmental, so I ask your forgiveness ahead of time if you are offended by any of my words. Please read the whole article in its entirety.

I want your friendship here on Facebook, I actually cherish it….And as a friend I want to give you love and receive love from you…I want to connect…I want to agree…and in love, have the right to disagree…I want to discuss faith, family, religion, God, whatever, anything, and everything with you. I want as a person to take the time to post a response to a comment and/or send a personal message. I want my friends here to stimulate my thinking, as I try to do the same for them. I want my friends here ask for prayer, so I can pray for them…give a word…send a blessing….let me know they like something…..or don’t like something, as I will try to do the same for them. I want to know you and who you are.

I don’t want you to just send me a Heart, just for the sake of sending out a bunch of hearts….I want you to tell me your heart, teach me your heart, share your heart with me…..Don’t just send me a smiley symbol just for the sake of sending something out…Please….Talk to me from your heart, make me smile and give me an opportunity to do the same for you…..There are pictures that are tremendous, that stir my soul, I want to see them, send me those….There are videos that make my heart cry out to God and give me knowledge and joy, I want to see those too. I need to be actually loved and to be sharing love, it’s part of my being, my nature, my core. I love it when someone on here takes the time here on Facebook to pick out a special card, or heart for me, and sends it to me. But when I get it 10 times in a row, over and over, the gift loses all its value as I realize it wasn’t for me but just something for someone to send out.

I don’t want a farm gift, I don’t have a farm, and I want a friend. I am not in the Mafia; I am in the body of Christ. I am not in Farmville or part of the Mafia apps, if I were and we were both sharing that here on Facebook then that would be great. When I get those, I do not even know what they are or what they mean.  I am a believer, and I am your friend. Last week I got hit with a snowball from a Facebook friend that invited me to a snowball fight, which in itself is fine. The problem is, it was sent out randomly to a list of friends and as a result I got it posted on my page 14 times in a row. I went to the sender’s page to point it out to them and they already had many complaints from a lot of other users. Nothing in that really connects much with me. It makes my point exactly. My article here in not to be negative or rude: but uplifting and empowering. I sometime get hit 10-15 times with the same pillow from the same person as a result of some mass send out asking me to hit them back. Since I am receiving it 5-15 times in a row, they do not even realize they are sending it to me. That means it is not personal to them as they are sending it out multiple times, so why should it be personal to me? My primary goal in this article is with our responsibilities in loving each other as members of Facebook and together in the Body of Christ.

 Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (New Living Translation)

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

How about 1 million or 10 maybe 50 million standing side by side, that is impossible to break. Facebook gives us that opportunity.

Do Everything in Love, 1 Cor. 16:14

I know we have Farms, E-Cards, Smiley Faces, Bows, Ribbons and Hearts, Bears and Hugs, and they are all ok, but our responsibility toward each other as fellow recipients of God’s mercy and love, however, goes much deeper than that. There is a good reason why. While we may find ourselves necessarily involved with unbelievers in life (outside FB) as the result of various human relationships (mother/son, brother/sister, employer/employee, etc.), we have no spiritual union with unbelievers beyond those human ties.

But when it comes to our relationship with fellow believers, and that includes those here especially on Facebook, there is a different defining issue. No matter what happens in our previous human relationships, here in Christ we have been joined by his Spirit into one body in an organic union like the relationship of arm to hand or leg to foot. This new spiritual union brings with it new responsibilities. We can use these on Facebook tremendously, as a unique and POWERFUL arm of the body of Christ. We have the ability to connect together, all Christians of all denominations, with no church walls in a force and power that has never been available in the history of the world. For the first time since the advent of the cross we have the opportunity for millions, tens of millions, and eventually hundreds of millions of believers, to connect with one another almost instantly, at anytime, at anywhere in the world.  We can be unified in love, will and purpose.

These new responsibilities are the subject of a great deal of New Testament teaching. The abilities for the body of Christ to reach out, has greatly evolved in the last 2000 years, and many of our essential needs have become lost in the unfortunate secularization of our practices. For some of us, our relationships between are no longer defined as organic unity, but by our organizational structures. As a result, our “love one another” responsibilities toward each other, as spelled out in the Word have been ignored, compromised, or forgotten.

God says in Colossians 3:17, 23-24, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. . . And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men, Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

A Pastor friend of mine here on Facebook in Europe recently wrote to me. He said, “As much as I appreciate FB connections, I dislike FIGUREHEAD friendship. I am deleting many on my list. I am not here for mere display of numbers. Iron sharpens iron. If I have fewer connections on here, that’s ok. I am not running for political post. I just want to get in touch. PLEASE!!!

In the 1950s, sociologists coined the term “homophily” (love of the same), to explain our tendency to link up with one another in ways that confirms and affirms our core beliefs. Facebook that has given us new ways to connect in love and speak truth to one another, showing and converting that love into spiritual power, becoming a “spiritual homophily”. Facebook offers the Body an efficient and far-reaching way to bond, which erodes natural barriers.

”Homophily” refers to a tendency to associate with others who think in similar ways, regardless of differences in status, age, gender, class, race, and so forth. This is often expressed in the adage “birds of a feather flock together”.  We believers are the birds and we are flocking together on Facebook, united by God, with love for one another. That is why these friendships and the way we can connect with each other so important to the Kingdom.

The benefits of my “friends” to me are enormous. You as my friend are part of my future. Friends affect our future and our present. Friendship is a means of fellowship. Honestly, it is good to send that pillow to some that you have connected with in that way, but not to everyone. There are friends here that connect with the farms, they enjoy it, and I think that’s great for them, but not everyone. I am not here for pillow, farm or flower either. I connect differently with friends and my friends are different than just that to me. Friendship is the nucleus of the body of Christ, as we love one another and connect with one another, the enemy is defeated.

We can to use this website not only as an opportunity to make friends and connect and fellowship but as a weapon against the enemy. And as we love one another, we can seize this tremendous opportunity to use Facebook as a salve to heal wounds, as a life-preserver to one who is drowning and as loving arms to someone who is lost or hurting. I will try, because that person might end up being me, or that person might end up being you. We need to personally connect, know and love one another, so that if, or when something should happen to one of us…..We can honestly say….”I am here really here for you, my Facebook friend”.

Job 16:20   My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God.

  3. This was a great article about FB friends.
Really hit home for me. And no i wasn’t offended in any way. As a matter of fact very uplifted and encouraged. God can reach so many through FB, without necessarily using a particular App or repost. By speaking from our hearts is the truest most genuine way to friendship and spread Gods love a well. Loved what u said about reaching others of all faiths and backgrounds, too many judge before or instead of reaching out. God Bless you and thanks for Blessing me through what God has put on your heart. Be Blessed.

    In Him!

    Cat!

  4. So right and true.I agree with you..Facebook can be a mean of blessing even to those who havent accepted Jesus Christ yet. and that’S how the message was delivered to me
    God bless you

  5. Hi Darrell, having read your article on FB friends I thought I would share my experience on how God has used me here. 5 mths ago Holy Spirit led me to friend a guy who went to the same High School I did only graduated 3yrs earlier. I didn’t know him but obeyed and sent the request. He accepted and I saw on his profile he served buddha. I wondered why I was compelled to friend him, then a month later he posted several things about a horrible fight with His fiance & asked people to please pray. I responded and said I would pray at my prayer group and would respond back with what God gave me concerning his situation. I did & got some answers, wrote what I saw & was led to give him my Phone #. Next day Holy Spirit woke me & said he would call in 20minutes. He did & we talked and he gave his life to the Lord. He was full of joy & said I was the first real Christian to reach out to him in love & acceptance. We talked several times, then 2 weeks later he went home to be with the Lord. I am so glad I obeyed God. He was a gentle soul who passed on happy and full of joy at his new start in life. It affected me deeply and I felt his loss but rejoiced at his home going. Now God has brought me another to minister to on FB who is lost in such a deeply profound way that all I can do is love her right where she is. God will use all avenues if we will only make ourselves sensitive to Holy Spirit and obey. God Bless you!

    • Wow Rondi….Wow…I am speechless…What an incredible story…again… What an incredible story…Thank God for you listening to His voice and reaching out in love…You keep on ministering, God is definately using you as a vessel for His service…I will be praying for you…what a blessing you are to me

  6. Well said; I am sincerly glad we reconnected after all these years and I’m so proud of you and what you’ve done with your life. Keep writing; there is always someone out there that just may need to hear what you have to say. Love you, Marcy

  7. Your Blog is so genuine So much honesty. Its so uplifting to know i have a friend on facebootk I have never met, yet so caring and honest. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life. May God bless you.

  8. There are no words to describe the emotional profoundness of this blog article. I came to FB in order to be an encouragement and grow as a person; a believer, a woman…because I positively desired to impact others for their growth and uplifting. I wanted to reconnect, yes….but, more so…I KNEW a part of my essence was dying prior…the relevancy essence. The essential element in a personality that makesone RELEVANT to others joys, pain, plights. Reality TV is a cheap imitation of this…and makes us think we “know what’s going on”.
We MUST approach others about THEMSELVES to be balanced in OURSELVES. This is Jesus…this is His approach. Compassionate, passionate Relevancy.

Thank you, Darrell, for having the intelligence you’ve apparently worked hard to develop (its hard work; lots and lots of hours with others, swallowing “rights”…and takes a tough kind of tenacity and emotional courage) and posting these type of blogs. I really appreciate and relate. Looks as though you left some of those silly stereotypes about men behind as well…and are much better for it.

    • Wow Dawne,
I am just a simple servant with a laptop trying to be a blessing to the Body of Christ and a beacon of hope to the lost. I have made so many mistakes in my life, and caused myself all the pain and agony that sin causes, that I now want to help others have a closer and more fulfilling walk with Christ, and avoid the self creating pit falls that I have in life. We need not take ourselves too serious, as we are not the focus, He is. I just want us all as believers to be the kind of person He talks about in Jude 22…there are some among you having compassion, therfore making a difference, that is who we should be in Christ. A Body, filled with compassion…Making a difference. Thanks for your kind words.

  9. Here, Here, Darrell….big “Amen!”. Compassion (the action behind the Love & Empathy). I enjoy the blogs….good discussion and reminders.

  10. Thank you for sharing this blog and for hearing God. We need obedient vessels, like yourself, on all social networking sites. God bless you.

  11. There are so many good things that do come out of facebook relationships. Apps., games, etc. do not really interest me either. I have “met’ some really good people here. But, then again, I realize that fb should never be taken too seriously as a way to actually consider a connection you make as being a good, true, best friend…. Unless you knew that person from years before, that’s different. I suppose what I am trying to say is, we are two people that do have common ground and I enjoy your posts, etc. But….it would be hard to ‘talk’ to you about anything too serious or personal, since we are really still real life strangers to each other’s lifes. Anyway, Darrell, I do say Thank you for your time! Rick

    • Hi Rick, Thanks for your comments. I agree that the best connections in life are made when you can reach out and touch someone in person. And I agree that personal relationships are between those who have developed those from real life relationships, on from which we can draw from each other from personal knowledge. But one thing that FB does is gives us the power of the written word to encourage, uplift, and unfortunately sometimes to damage and do harm to individuals. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Cor. 13 about love and the power it possesses, the correct application of it and its true characteristics. I have never met Paul in person, nor have I seen his face on a profile, but the ordained words he wrote help guide my thoughts and life in accordance with what I feel in respect to my relationship to God. God does gives us the ability on FB to interact with one another in a way that can edify the Body of Christ and each other, it is up to us how we use it. There are no strangers in those who have been redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb, for we are of one body. Romans 12:5, Even though we are many people, we are one body in Christ and individual parts connected to each other. Thanks for your time too buddy and blessings be upon you…Darrell

  12. thank you for sharing this blog and for hearing GOD .I DO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR TİME

  13. Darrell, I so appreciate your willingness to share your feelings so openly. You certainly said nothing offensive, at least not to me. It’s heart warming. My brother-in-law is a preacher and posts a daily devotional and worship song on fb, and of course, I’m gonna check it out. That’s how I got to you and HOLD A GRUDGE? And that’s something I’m working on – recognizing unforgiveness and forgiving!! Thanks for that!!

Rick mentioned that it would be hard to ‘talk’ to you about anything too serious or personal, but there are people that can share very personal things with a total ‘stranger’ when they couldn’t with a close ‘friend’. Sometimes it is easier for people to open up that way and it can be very healing.

Thank you for ‘listening’ to God and putting it out there…………..

    May God Bless You Mightily!!

    Trina

    • 1 Corinthians 12
      Hi Trina

Galation 6:2 tells us Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. We are all to be as close as we can to one another this is the desire of our Lord, to share and carry each others burdens. We are all of one body to be in one accord.
      1 Cor 12
13For we were all baptized byc one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

So I enjoy “listening thereby pleasing my Saviour, and edifying my own spirit..Thanks for sharing….Blessings

  14. Thank you for sharing this. Blessings to you.

  15. Greetings and Praise the Lord, thanks for the blessed and fresh anointed message that you had provided it is really a heart touching that Almighty Lord Jesus Christ Teachings. We should always not forget what is mentioned in John 3:16 please read it is the Bible Heart.

Keep in touch with us a Holy Kiss to you my Brethren from Peshawar, Pakistan.

    Pastor Gulzar Augustine

    • Thanks Pastor, And thanks for the reminding us that God loved us so much inf act that He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins in order that we could receive eternal salvation by the Blood of the Lamb….

  16. I agree, I tend not to participate in the games or the sharing of hearts and flowers, but I do care about those I subscribe to and want to touch hearts and encourage others. The enemy has taken over the airwaves far too much, so I like my blog and FB to be a source of encouragement and teaching of the truths about God. Coming from a background of the occult and new age – many years of it before I got saved, I know that those who are pursuing other faiths are seeking for God, and wanting something in their life. The enemy seeks to counterfeit the truth, and so many of the new age religions have much that is truthful. But there are also things that are off course. the only way to reach those who need God in their lives is through love and care, not bashing them over the head with scripture. I look forward to exploring your blog.

  17. I have been saved for 2 and 1/2 years,I am a Preacher Boy at Central Baptist Temple in Sanford,North Carolina.I believe in the King James Version Bible and that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins.I believe in Baptizing, and being washed by the blood of the Lamb.I am looking forward to reading your Blog, and being your friend.May God Bless You,Brother in Christ,I will see you in Heaven,What a day of Rejoicing that will be…

  18. Thank You Darrell for this posting. We agree with this in full and we also realize that eventually the good in everything and everybody will overcome the evil. It is our committent to work on behalf of the good that stirs us and moves us forward.
    Allan and Marisela

  19. Darrell, I loved it! I love it when people are transparent! Looking forward to reading your blog in the future. God bless you!

  20. Wow… Now there’s a well thought out profile. I can’t say I have actually seen one open, honest and up front like yours before brother. You do say what they mean. And mean what you say.

True friendship can be beautiful if it’s meaningfully spiritual and honorable. And with Jesus being our best friend, and His Spirit leading, comforting and teaching; a friendship can only flourish and spill our on others. Amen?

The only blessed gifts I have to offer any one is the gifts poured through me from the thrown room above. And they all come straight from my heart through words and deeds.

Thanks for adding me as your friend.
I’ll be there through the thick and thin.
I just want you to know what you go through,
I’ll be standing in the gap praying for you.

    • Thank you Janice…By all your comments an all the posts…I am humbled by your grace and kindness. You are an encouragement for me to keep following God as he directs me to write as a servant for the Body….blessings…darrell

  21. Thank you for being my friend,I have read several articles and they made me cry.I pray for your ministry, and ask God to bless you 10 fold.I have friends on here that are strangers, except thru Jesus. He is the bloodline that connects us all.God Bless and Keep you.and i am so looking forward to read more words from your heart.
    Holly

  22. I am so thankful God lead me to invite you as a friend in FB..
Your blog was so uplifting and encouraging…
May it touch more peoples lives as it touches mine…..
Very grateful to be part of this and be connected by sharing whats in my heart…
God bless you and use you more :):)

  23. Bro. Darrell how beautifully put. We are all Christ’s ambassadors while we are here in on this earth. We who are Christians (followers of Christ) are to be known for our love for one another.
If we all work together for the HIS kingdom, look at how much we could all accomplish together.
I am blessed to have added you as friend. I hope you will feel the same way.

    God bless you,
    Mary

  24. Thank you for the inspiring words for us to hear on F/B. I agree with what you had to say bout Mafia, Pillow,Heart, etc. etc. “Right plz. stop already”, from what I read about you, yea I’ll be your friend.

  25. I think what you wrote in your blog was straight from the heart and very well worded I agree with you when you say you’re not here mafia wars or farmville you are a christian I am leaping for joy that someone else has come to this reality and had the decenecy to say so god bless you megally

  26. Thanks for sharing, i was really blessed by this atticle. God bless

  27. Hi Darrell
I appreciate your comments above and share the same views as we who love Jesus Christ automatically desire to see others find the love of Christ and that they benefit from His death, burial and resurrection and ascension. Jesus so freely gave it compels us to want to give all that heaven has to offer. I’m also after fellowship and mutual spiritual impartation that we all get enriched and enlightened.
People must however learn to operate with courtesy and respect, Love and compassion, knowing that we were all created in the image and likeness of ONE creator. I hate and abhor the use of vulgarity and obscenity which some folks unfortunately feel is a lifestyle.
    God bless you.

  28. Darrel, I can’t put into words what these words meant to me. I participate in some of the games and apps. This article was so very powerful. I try to be careful of who i accept as my friends, and i have had to cut the cord on a few. Not because of different religious backgrounds but promoting untruths. It took me a few days to send an invite to you as I thought you might be one of them, but I kept getting a nagging feeling to check your page out. I am so very glad I did. My husband is an over the road truck driver and I travel with him always, and this is my only avenue as far as church goes. I am very glad I finally let our God Almighty lead me to your page. Bless you and have a wonderful day.

    • Thank you so much Tammy…You have no idea what your words mean to me…I am so glad to have you as a friend….Blessings to you and your husband, and I pray traveling protection for you guys on the road…In Christ..Darrell

  29. Thank you for the above blog, very well written. I have recently returned to my roots in God. I wandered the desert for 30 years, in a hopeless cloud of dust. I am a recovered addict alcoholic, incest survivor and battered wife. I have been beaten, raped, spit on, and almost killed many many times. When I look back on my life I can see where Angels interceded on my behave many many times. I never understood what it felt like to come home as I have never really had one I wanted to come home to until I returned to God. He was waiting with arms wide open…I am a grateful, blessed and forgiven child of the King. I am a Princess and I pray everyday for the love of God to shine through me and for Him to use me as He sees fit.
I look forward to getting to know you as my brother in Christ. Go with God, and may His will be done in your life always.
    Pamela

    • Wow….I tooo wandered for quite a few years Pamela…so I know that feeling of being LOST in the desert….I am so glad likje that 1 lostv sheep the Lord found you and made you His own…Look forward to getting to know and fellowship with you Blessings….darrell

  38. Dear brother Darrel, you are very special in doing what you are doing. I tell you the truth, the body of Christ is hurting. I love Jesus so much I have been alienated by my family but I am happy with Jesus alone. The church is more or less the same. I tell them I love them as they hate me. pray for me. I love you.

  39. I am at such a lost for words now. In fact, I am not good with words at all. I struggle to express into words what is in my heart. In this article you spoke exactly what is in my heart. I am amazed at how God puts people in our lives to speak for us. What you have said here I have been struggling for months to get it down on paper. I don’t have any college degrees and was hardly ever in school so I am not educated enough to present things the way I want to.

I so appreciate your heart and know that God is smiling down at you. You give glory to His Name. Thank you so much for being His child. May God bless you greatly.

  40. I have been read and following your site for 3 days and now I starting to like your post.I feel enjoy to read your article.
