“A Cheerful Giver”, Are you Sure?

“2 Corinthians 9:7 (New International Version)

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

I am going to basically explain the meaning of this verse and then tell you of an incident in which I was a witness of a true “Cheerful Giver” which changed my attitude and heart about giving. The Lord gave me the privilege of witnessing this anointed act of giving which will forever be my example in giving cheerfully to the Lord. I will tell the story after the explanation of the verse.

First, giving is a spiritual matter that is settled between a person and God in one’s own heart. Each, Paul says, should give what they have decided in their heart to give. Each is placed first for emphasis. “How much?” is a question that each person must answer for him/herself as they are led by the Spirit.

Second, giving requires resolve. The text reads what he has decided. The word in the Greek here is the verb proaireomai, found only here in the New Testament which means “to make up one’s own mind about something. That is why we should listen in our hearts as the Lord speaks to us about giving. It is not a matter that we should take lightly.

What we give should be a private decision. It is to be decided in our hearts.

The word cheerful means;

brighten, enliven, exhilarate, gaiety, gleefully, jollity, lighten up, merriment, perk up, refresh, brightness, conviviality, fun, good humor, good spirits, high spirits, lightheartedness, playfulness,

encouraging, glad, happy, hearty, in good spirits, in high spirits, jolly, jovial, joyful, joyous, light-hearted,  merry, pleasant, sparkling, spirited, sprightly, ungrudging, upbeat, whole-hearted,

A Giver:

A person who makes a gift of property, someone who devotes himself completely to a gift.  A bestower, donor, presenter, supporter.

Now the Story……

ARE YOU A CHEERFUL GIVER???…I used to think I knew what that meant, but God recently gave me a new perspective on my old way of thinking. Let me say in the beginning that this is an incredible story. The first two paragraphs I speak about giving, the last are about the most incredible act of giving I have ever witnessed in my life. It was so amazing that it brought tears to my eyes and affected everyone that saw it; with tearful emotion as it will you as you read about it. I like you have sat in a pew, and watched the offering pass by me all my life. Since my dad was a pastor, and I have been a pastor, I have been to church like a zillion times and given in the offering more times than I can remember.

The offering has almost at times become a ritual to us. Sometimes, we pay no more special attention to it, that we do the announcements or the closing prayer before we are dismissed. Studies indicate that roughly 75 percent of the offerings received by a church each year are given by 25 percent of the congregation. According to researchers, Christians give a little over 2% on average a year of their income to the church.

That is why my eye-witness of the following account was so moving. It was the Sunday following the Haitian earthquake. The Pastor directed and pleaded for the congregation to open their hearts and pocketbooks to give to those in need in a special offering for Haiti. As the music began to play and the offering made its rounds, I noticed the elderly woman sitting in front of me.  I have sat by her before and at her age she usually is very still and stands only with the aid of her cane. So I was surprised to see all the commotion she was making. She was desperately digging through every corner of her purse, with her elbow propped on her cane, looking for every dollar, dime, nickel and penny she had to put in the offering, trying to find all she had as the offering approached her.

As the offering bucket came to her, she was not ready. She held up the offering, taking a lot of time to dig for all she had. s to add to what they had.She was truly what the Lord meant by a cheerful giver.I was deeply moved, she was so frantic to give all she had, she then sat down, and her tiny hands shaking took and sat the bucket beside her as the usher waited at the end of the row. She then suddenly, in a flash upended her purse and started dumping it all out on the empty chair beside her and began sifting through all her items picking out all her various bills, quarters, dimes etc. She was oblivious to anyone around her or to the fact that various other items were falling out of the chair onto the floor. She was making sure that she had given all the money she had in her possession.

I have never witnessed anything so moving, as I have never witnessed the amazing effect it had on those sitting around her, including myself. I was so moved, tears immediately began falling from my eyes from what I was witnessing, as was the same from those around me who were also witnessing the event. The Spirit of God moved on everyone who witnessed her actions and we ALL went back into wallets, back into purses and begin adding to what was already in hand…As it brought tears to my eyes, the Lord taught me really with total understanding for the first time, the true meaning of a cheerful giver. I know now I have really seen one.  And now when I pray concerning my giving I pray for the Lord to please give me her heart of giving, and ask that you might pray the same with me, so that God might be glorified in our lives.

I am thankful to the Lord that I was able to witness almost to the letter the same event that Jesus witnessed as was recorded in Mark 12:41-43 (The Message) Sitting across from the offering box, he was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all.”

  1. I can just visualize this scene taking place. I see the lit’l O’ woman feeling anxious cause she felt rushed. I just hope that ushers can be patient and discern when one is wanting to give but needs time to gather it up. Even I have felt under pressure gathering my offering before. I always have the regular tithes and offering ready. But those special offerings take time to gather. Perhaps the ushers should stand at the door with a bucket as folks leave; they were not prepared the first time around. And give as they go out of the door. I’ve seen others not be ready and get passed up. I feel it’s so important; that I get up and take it to the ushers in the back. Mine, others, makes no difference. I see the offering time as being holy. It hurts when I can’t give in everyone’s need. God is our provider. And I give as it is given. You see a man going through the trash for food, you buy him a meal from the restaurant he was digging in front of. Some one lacks bus fair to go see their dying mother in the hospital. If you have it, you provide it in the name of Jesus. Sometimes you not enough; is some body’s enough. It hurts when I can’t give.

    • This is in response to an earlier comment from prabhatkumarmali above.
I know this brother. prabhatkumarmali always wants to cry about someone helping him but he does not practice what he preaches. Just beg and give me and he is rude and so un-thankful. He is also resentful of those who “he thinks’ are more fortunate. He badgers those who give to him continually. He expects Americans to just send money to him personally because he tells them he has an orphanage. He is not even set up legally. I frankly am tired of people like him.

      • I also discovered that Prabhat Kumar Mali (aka Surandeep Pradhan, aka Gracechildren home is a deceiver, hiding under God’s word just to get money. Oh, he MIGHT have an illegal orphanage, but he is the most unethical self-proclaimed minister, love-money greedy, selfish people I have ever know and I KNOW HIM. BEWARE of his tactics. He will say ANYTHING to make you ‘think” he is ok, but he is NOT.

  3. very moving story

  4. Thanks for sharing this beautiful and edifying story! Don’t you think that sadly in some places giving has become a ‘hush hush’ issue as it may put people off. Blessings

  5. You don’t have to advertise when giving rather be prepared of what you intend giving, prepare your offering before coming to church ie don’t empty your wallets or bags for all to see.
