“Carpe diem” in English means seize the day. There are days that we set aside in society for celebration. Thanksgiving is one of those days to seize. Every year we collect our thoughts and summarize all the things that we are thankful for. This year I am thankful more than anything for God’s peace.
God’s peace allows us to be at rest in our hearts against all the stress and strife that life can bring us. I believe that most of the time we are the architects of our own problems. We allow our minds to create issues in our lives that we struggle with.
Studies show that 1 in 5 Americans are on at least one type of drug to treat some type of psychological disorder. Prescription drugs like Prozac, Xanax and Zoloft are almost as common in the medicine cabinet as aspirin. I am the first to admit that I too have taken prescription drugs in my past to deal with issues in my life.
The items on the list are endless concerning the things that we can be diagnosed with for a medicated medical cure. We are too sad or we are too happy. We eat too much or we eat too little. The world is way too large for us to cope with, or the walls are closing in making our world way too small. We are too tired or we have too much energy. We have too much anxiety or we are too listless and uninterested. The list is endless.
I am not saying that medicines do not help or that there is anything wrong with treating any of these issues. What I am saying is that I believe that the peace of God is a cure for whatever ails you. Jesus tells us in John 14:27 – My peace I give unto you – not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
God’s peace will allow you to spend each day living for everything, and expecting nothing.
There is so much to be thankful for that we sometimes forget life’s greatest treasures. Be thankful for the love of a spouse, and the love of your children. Daily thanks for lazy rainy days, cozy nights by the fireplace, and crunchy snow under your feet. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets with clouds that dance across the sky. The words “I love you” being the greatest gift that we can ever give or receive.
Be thankful today for God’s peace and receive God’s greatest “I love you” in Christ Jesus.
